Air Fryer Toaster Ovens: How Combos Compare With Basket Models

An air fryer toaster oven is a countertop oven with a fan and an air fry basket. Compared with a basket air fryer, it adds toasting, flat pans and multiple rack positions. The trade-offs are stricter foil rules, more parts to clean and a wider footprint. Check which functions a model lists before comparing sizes.

What an air fryer toaster oven does differently

A basket air fryer is a closed drawer. A toaster oven combo is a box with a door, several rack positions and flat accessories. Ninja’s Foodi Digital Air Fry Oven, for example, ships with a removable crumb tray, a wire rack, a sheet pan and an air fry basket. Each goes in a set position: the crumb tray below the bottom heating element, the wire rack in the bottom rail, and the basket in the top rail.

Here is how three combo and oven models compare with two basket models, using each maker’s published figures.

Toasting: the clearest difference

Basket air fryers have no toast function. Combo ovens do, and they handle it differently from air frying. Ninja’s oven guide says there is no temperature setting in Toast mode, the unit does not preheat for it, and you choose the number of slices and a darkness level instead. Ninja stresses selecting the exact number of slices “to avoid over- or under-toasting.”

Flat pans and pizza

A tray-style cavity takes food a round or square basket cannot. Cuisinart says the TOA-70 fits a 12-inch pizza. Ninja’s guide suggests lining its sheet pan with parchment for cookies. Foil rules are stricter in ovens

This catches people who move from a basket model. Ninja’s DZ200 basket FAQ says foil is safe in the baskets. Its Foodi Digital Air Fry Oven guide says the opposite for the oven:

• “DO NOT cover crumb tray or any part of the oven with metal foil. This will cause the oven to overheat or cause a fire.”
• “NEVER place aluminum foil on top of the sheet pan or broil pan. This traps grease and can cause a fire.”

Cleaning: more parts, gentler methods

Ninja’s oven guide asks you to empty the crumb tray frequently and wash all accessories separately. It says not to use abrasive cleaners, scrubbing brushes or chemical cleaners on the interior, and to put a non-abrasive cleanser on the sponge rather than the oven surface. Ninja also recommends hand washing the accessories for longest use.

Before first use, Ninja suggests running the oven empty on Air Fry at 450°F for 20 minutes, with all accessories inside, to burn off packaging residue.

Counter space and storage

Footprint varies more than capacity suggests. The Instant Vortex Plus 10 measures about 13.2 by 13.2 by 14.4 inches. Ninja’s DZ201 dual basket model measures about 15.6 by 13.9 by 12.4 inches. Ninja’s Foodi Digital Air Fry Oven takes a different approach: it flips up into a storage position once it has cooled.

Leave clearance, too. Ninja’s oven guide asks for adequate space above and on all sides for air circulation, and Cosori asks for 5 inches behind and above the Pro LE.

Rotisserie and dehydrating

Some oven-style models add accessories a basket cannot take. The Instant Vortex Plus 10 includes a rotisserie basket, spit and forks, and Instant says to insert rotisserie accessories and food before preheating. Ninja’s oven includes a Dehydrate function.

Which style fits your kitchen?

Choose a toaster oven combo if you want to replace a toaster, cook flat foods like pizza, or use several rack levels.
